Cicada Life Cycle
Adult cicada |
The cicada, an insect of the order hemiptera, has a remarkable life during which the juvenile lives underneath the soil surface and the adult lives in the open. Using its ovipositor, the female lays some eggs in twigs. When the nymphs hatch from the eggs, they will fall to ground, immediately burrow, and then attach themselves to roots from which they obtain sustenance. This subterranean life may last for a few years to as long as more than a decade. They will eventually climb up trees or shrubs to undergo molting process. Adult cicadas will emerge and start a new stage of its life cycle, leaving behind its characteristic skin shed. Adults only live for a relatively short period-usually for a few weeks.
