Bulbul Pictures: Two Bulbuls of the Genus Pycnonotus

The brown bulbuls of the genus Pycnonotus are common inhabitants of the forest margins. They are very common and ralatively easy to observe, but some species are quite tricky to identify because of their close resemblance with each other.

Red-eyed Bulbul
The Red-eyed Bulbul gets its name because of its red eyes. Similar in appearance is the Olive-winged Bulbul that I usually identify by whitish streaks on its ear and olive flight feathers.

It is not unusual to find Red-eyed Bulbul and Oliove-winged Bulbul co-occur together at the same place. Both species like to eat fruits, but they also take insects that they pick from the branches and leaves.
